How to Lay a Concrete Base with Irish Cement & Brooks

A solid concrete base is essential for a durable and stable foundation. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to prepare and lay a concrete base using Irish Cement, ensuring a perfect foundation for your job.

Step 1: Safety First

Step 2: Prepare the Area

Begin by marking out the area where your concrete base will go. Clear any vegetation and topsoil from this area, extending slightly beyond the dimensions of your base. Then, prepare a firm, level base using compacted gravel or clay. This will support the concrete and ensure a stable foundation.

Step 3: Set Up the Formwork

To contain the concrete while it sets, place side-forms around the perimeter. Use clean, smooth timber planks and secure them with pegs. Make sure the pegs are driven below the level of the planks, and keep the top edges of the side-forms level to create a consistent shape.

Step 4: Mix and Pour the Concrete

Step 7: Float the Surface

For a smooth finish, float the surface of the concrete using a hand float. Apply the float in wide, overlapping arcs, making two or three passes to ensure a flawless surface.

Step 8: Add Texture (Optional)

If you prefer a textured finish, lightly drag the bristles of a stiff brush across the surface while the concrete is setting but before it hardens completely. This adds grip and character to the finish.

Step 9: Cure the Concrete

Proper curing is crucial for high-quality, long-lasting concrete. Protect your work from rain and extreme temperatures during the curing process. Depending on weather conditions, curing can take up to 7 days. This step ensures that your concrete sets correctly and maintains its strength.
